Installation Process
From Consultation to First Swim
A complete guide to the fibreglass pool installation process in Greater Sydney — what to expect at each stage, typical timelines, and tips for a smooth build.
Initial Consultation
1–2 weeksYour journey begins with a consultation with your chosen pool installer. They'll visit your property to assess site access, soil conditions, underground services, and your backyard dimensions. You'll discuss pool types, sizes, colours, and optional extras. Most installers provide a free consultation and written quote.
Design & Approval
2–4 weeksOnce you've chosen your installer and pool design, they'll prepare the documentation required for approval. For most Greater Sydney properties, a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) is the fastest pathway — processed by a private certifier rather than council. The certifier checks your plans against the NSW Codes SEPP requirements.
Excavation
1–3 daysWith approvals in hand, excavation begins. A mini excavator digs the hole to the precise dimensions required for your pool shell. Soil is removed from site — typically 15–30 cubic metres for a standard family pool. Good site access is essential; your installer will advise on any access requirements or additional costs for difficult access.
Pool Shell Installation
1 dayThis is the most dramatic day of the build — your fibreglass pool shell arrives on a truck and is craned into the excavated hole. The crane operator and installation team work together to lower the shell precisely into position. The pool is then levelled, and initial backfilling begins. Most shells are installed in a single day.
Plumbing & Equipment
2–5 daysAfter the shell is in position, the plumbing is connected — pipes running from the pool to the equipment pad. The equipment pad is constructed and your pump, filter, salt chlorinator, and any optional extras (heater, automation system) are installed and connected. All plumbing is pressure-tested before backfilling.
Concreting & Surrounds
3–7 daysThe concrete surrounds (coping and pool deck) are formed and poured. This is a critical stage that determines the final look of your pool area. Options include standard concrete, exposed aggregate, or coloured concrete. The concrete is cured over several days before it can be walked on. Retaining walls are also constructed at this stage if required.
Pool Fencing
1–2 daysNSW law requires compliant child-resistant pool fencing before the pool can be used. Your installer will arrange installation of pool fencing that meets AS1926.1-2012 requirements. Options include aluminium tubular fencing, glass frameless fencing, or semi-frameless glass. The certifier will inspect the fencing as part of the final sign-off.
Handover & First Swim
1 dayYour installer walks you through the completed pool — demonstrating how to operate the pump, filter, salt chlorinator, and any other equipment. You'll receive a handover pack with manuals, warranty documents, and water chemistry guidance. The certifier issues the final Occupation Certificate, and you're ready for your first swim!

Important Things to Know
Site Access is Critical
Your installer needs clear access for excavation machinery and the crane. Narrow driveways, overhead powerlines, or limited access can significantly affect costs and timelines. Discuss this early.
Weather Delays
Concrete work cannot proceed in wet weather. Greater Sydney's summer storms can cause delays. Build some buffer time into your expectations, especially for summer builds.
Soil Conditions
Rocky ground, high water tables, or expansive clay soils (common in Greater Sydney) can increase excavation costs and may require engineering solutions.
Underground Services
Before excavation, underground services (gas, water, electrical, NBN) must be located using Dial Before You Dig. Your installer should arrange this.
